Summertime and Delicious White Wines
Once we get through the cloudy and often rainy to days of spring, it is nice to settle into summertime and enjoy some relaxation and warmth. As the days get longer and life gets a bit more enjoyable, it seems inevitable that I start drinking more white wine. It is not’ to say that I do not drink white wine year-round. I do. In fact, I love a good chardonnay at Thanksgiving. This Thanksgiving we will be opening a bottle of Alpha Omega Chardonnay we have been cellaring for a couple years. I look forward to my first sip of that wine. This chardonnay could probably be aged upwards of ten years which means it is crafted more like a white burgundy versus a new age California Chardonnay. It has good minerality and is well balanced.
Back to summertime and white wine … they just seem made for each other. One of the great joys of summertime is cooking up some jumbo shrimps (sometime I grill the on the barbeque) maybe whipping up a salad from what is growing in my garden, add a fresh baguette, and of course a perfectly chilled Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris from Oregon. This year I opened up a great bottle of wine I received from one of the wine gift baskets I got as a wine gift. Perfectly chilled white wine doesn’t mean freezing cold with icicles floating in the glass. I prefer my white wine to warm up a bit after taking it out of the refrigerator. Usually ten minutes on the kitchen countertop is enough to warm up the wine without getting to warm. Clearly if it is the hottest day of summer, less than ten minutes will do as well. I don’t advocate drinking white wine warm, just not too cold.
