The Midland Fastbreak Basketball Club 12-U team won the 2009 12-U Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Division 1 State Championship on May 4, 2009 by going undefeated 7-0 through regional and state tournaments. Last weekend (April 25th/26th) they were in Flint for regional play and in the first game trailed the Michigan Mystics 18-14 at half and then rallied to win 45-35. Their free throw shooting was phenomenal that game finishing 26-32 (81%) from the line for the game. In the second game of regionals they defeated Michigan Manarch's 47-34. In the final game of regional play they locked up the number one seed going into the AAU State Tournament by beating Ypsilanti Sting 53-36.
Eight Teams advanced to the MI AAU Division 1 12-U State Tournament (May 2nd and 3rd) in Livonia. The 1st Game found them paired up against the Ypsilanti Sting again winning 61-32. Again, free throw shooting was amazing as they knocked down 14 out of 16 (87.5%) for the game. In the 2nd game of the State Tournament they played the Waterford Wave leading 26-22 at half, and on to winning 66-49. They hit seven 3 pointers in the game and were 21 for 25 (84%) from the free throw line. This set up the Winner's Bracket Final on Saturday Night vs. the Motown Sparks (same group of girls that has beaten them the last two years, very athletic, fast and HUGE). Both teams went into the final game undefeated in 12-U play for the season. Midland Fastbreak went on to win 54-47, shooting extremely well 21-40 from the field, including 5-10 from the 3 pt. arc., 9-10 from the free throw line.
On Sunday the Motown Sparks came out of the loser’s bracket to face Midland Fastbreak again, having to win twice to win the Championship. We were down 30-20 at the half, but came out on fire in the 2nd half and six minutes into the 2nd half had tied it up. It was back and forth the rest of the way with Midland Fastbreak pulling out a thrilling 53-49 win, facing full court pressure from baseline to baseline only having two turnovers. A great end to a wonderful season. Midland Fastbreak 12-U finished with an overall record of 34-4, 23-0 vs. 12-U teams and 11-4 vs. 13-U teams. Team members are Lily Hami, Meredith Hamlet, Karli Herrington, Ellie Juengel, Chloee King, Halee Neiman, Jordan Raes, Mallory Rajewski, Jessica Walter and Lindsay Winter. They are coached by Mark Juengel & D’Andra Walter.
Outstanding ladies, congratulations!
